![]() ![]() …Yet in reality, Condie manages to represent nothing but normative roles and values, even in the middle of an ‘uprising’! Also, we mustn’t forget about the Twighlight-esque love triangle, originally set out in Matched : tall, lithe, good-boy Xander, pride of his community, just rebellious enough to be morally righteous, otherwise squeaky clean (though actually, to be fair – the Xander character probably has the most comprehensive overall development – more on that later) and black sheep Ky, with his chunky body, moody, ‘man of few words persona’ and dark past. Much the same as Matched, both books are supposed to inspire angry, teenage, somewhat revolutionary sentiment – we’ve got love! Societal upheaval! A girl who is (supposed to be) a special little snowflake, a unicorn in a field of dullard horses!… To be honest, Crossed and Reached inspire much the same sentiment as Matched (which I wrote about here ) – this is so close – so so close – to being brilliant, it is infuriating. So here I was, thinking I’d written about Crossed … oopsies. ![]()
